Responsible Gambling
Responsible gambling means keeping play affordable, time-limited and in your control. This page explains the tools that help, how they work in Great Britain, and what changes if you use an overseas casino that is not part of GAMSTOP. It is for adults aged 18 and over. Gambling is not a way to earn money or fix financial problems, and no site can guarantee winnings or withdrawals.
Disclosure: how this site earns money
Non Gamstop Casinos may earn a commission if you sign up to an operator through our links. Commercial relationships do not decide rankings or ratings. Our ratings are editorial scores, not customer-review scores. Details are on our About Us page.
What GAMSTOP is, and what it covers
GAMSTOP is the free national self-exclusion service for online gambling in Great Britain. Once you register, every online operator licensed by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) must stop you opening or using an account. You choose an exclusion period of six months, one year or five years. It cannot be cancelled early, and when the period ends you must take a further step to be removed.
Note the scope: the UKGC regulates gambling for Great Britain, not the whole of the UK. Northern Ireland has separate rules. Also, GAMSTOP only binds operators that hold a UKGC licence. A site that accepts British customers is not the same as a site authorised to serve them.
What changes at casinos not on GamStop
Casinos that sit outside GAMSTOP typically hold an overseas licence, such as one issued in Curaçao, and are not regulated by the UKGC. That has practical consequences:
- Your GAMSTOP exclusion will not apply. If you registered because you wanted a break, using such a site undermines that decision.
- UK protections may not apply. UKGC rules on affordability checks, advertising, bonus terms and complaints handling do not bind these operators.
- Dispute routes differ. You would deal with the operator and its licensing body, not UK-based alternative dispute resolution schemes. Outcomes are less certain.
- Safer-gambling tools vary. Some sites offer deposit limits, loss limits, time-outs and self-exclusion; others offer little. Check before you register rather than assuming.
- Currency and payments. Some sites price offers in euros or dollars, which can add conversion costs. Confirm GBP account availability and fees.
If you have self-excluded, or suspect gambling is harming you, the honest advice is not to use these sites. Our guide to non GamStop casinos is written for people who understand these trade-offs and are not currently excluded.
Tools that keep play under control
Deposit and loss limits
A deposit limit caps what you can add in a day, week or month. A loss limit caps net losses over a period. Set them before your first deposit, when you are calm, and treat any limit increase as something to wait on rather than act on immediately. Reductions should be instant; increases should have a cooling-off delay. Check that the operator works this way.
Time-outs and self-exclusion
A time-out is a short break, often from 24 hours to several weeks. Self-exclusion is longer and should be hard to reverse. Operator-level self-exclusion only covers that one brand. GAMSTOP covers all UKGC-licensed sites at once.
Blocking software and bank tools
Gambling blocking software can stop gambling sites and apps on your devices. Many UK banks also let you block gambling transactions on cards, which is useful if willpower is the weak point. Both are worth setting up alongside GAMSTOP.
Reality checks and account history
Session reminders and activity statements show how long and how much you have played. Review them honestly. If numbers surprise you, that is useful information.
Bonuses and the pressure to keep playing
Large headline offers can encourage bigger deposits than planned. Wagering requirements mean you must stake a multiple of the bonus, or bonus plus deposit, before withdrawing. Other terms often matter just as much: maximum bet while bonus funds are active, expiry dates, game contribution percentages and cashout caps.
Worked example: a £100 deposit with a 100% bonus and 35x wagering on bonus funds means £3,500 of staking before the bonus can be withdrawn. At typical slot returns, you should expect to lose some of that turnover. Do not deposit more to chase a bonus, and skip it if the terms make you uncomfortable. The same applies to free spins, cashback and loyalty rewards: they are marketing, not income.
Spending money safely
- Only gamble with money left after bills, rent, food and savings.
- Never borrow, use credit, or deposit money meant for something else. Credit cards are banned for gambling in Great Britain at UKGC-licensed sites, but check what an overseas site accepts and think twice.
- Check fees, minimum deposits, withdrawal limits and processing times in the terms before depositing. Verification (identity and sometimes source-of-funds checks) can delay withdrawals, and it is normal for it to be requested.
- If you use cryptocurrency, remember prices can move between deposit and withdrawal.
Warning signs worth taking seriously
- Spending more than you planned, or chasing losses
- Hiding your gambling or lying about it
- Gambling to escape stress, or feeling irritable when you stop
- Reversing withdrawals to keep playing
- Missing bills or borrowing because of gambling
If several of these sound familiar, stop and speak to someone.
Sports betting carries the same risks
Many casino sites also run a sportsbook, often from a shared wallet, so money moves between products easily. Fast in-play betting, accumulators and cash-out features can make losses mount quickly. Decimal odds of 3.00 return £3 per £1 staked including your stake, but the implied chance is roughly one in three. Apply the same limits to sport as to casino games.

Choosing operators with safeguards in mind
Our ranked list includes Betmica, Kikibet, Betninja, WinnerIsland, Zombillion, Smash Casino, Nightluck, CoinPoker, Rivo and Daytonaspin. We have not verified the safer-gambling tools at each of them for this page, so treat none as confirmed safe. Before registering with any operator, check these points:
- Which licence is held, and whether you can verify it on the regulator's own website
- Whether deposit limits, loss limits, time-outs and self-exclusion are available in your account
- How bonus terms, withdrawal limits and verification work
- How to complain, and who handles escalations
- Whether GBP is supported, and what conversion costs apply
Read each operator's own terms rather than relying on advertised offers. Our Terms and Conditions explain how to use this site, and you can reach us through Contact Us.
A sensible next step
If you are in control and choose to play, set limits first, keep sessions short and treat spending as entertainment cost. If you are struggling, stop, keep GAMSTOP in place, and talk to GamCare. You do not need to wait for a crisis.
